The WordPress SEO plugin assigns a score to posts.

The Flesch Reading Ease Test is a tool that checks the readibility or how easy your copy is to read.

We know that website visitors often skim more than they read. In fact, very few people actually read word for word. With that in mind, and with some websites having a wide range of audiences of many different educational backgrounds, it’s important that copy can be read by many different people.

The Flesch Reding Ease Test breaks down its ratings  into these categories:

  • Easy to read (Understood by an average 11-year-old)
  • Fairly easy to read
  • OK to read (Understood by 13-to-15-year-old students)
  • Difficult to red (Best left to college graduates)

The Flesch Reading Ease Test looks at the complexity of words used, sentence length and the relationship between the two.

Using the WordPress Yoast SEO plugin you can rate your post as you are writing it. The SEO plugin even offers solutions to improve readibility, like making shorter sentences.

There are several websites out there that allow you to test your copy’s Flesch Reading Ease Test as well. Microsoft Word and Outlook also offer the test.
